Ep 117 - Bridging the Gap from Thought to Result - Interview with Gemma Lumicisi
How do you actually get from thinking good thoughts to achieving your goals?
As we launch our life coaching journey, we’re hearing things like “you bring about what you think about” and “stay positive”. While I completely agree it’s crucial to have a healthy mindset, how does that actually translate to tangible results?
Recently I sat down to talk about this very topic with my friend and fellow coach, Gemma Lumicisi, on her podcast Freedom to Coach. We wanted to explore the gap that many life coaches experience between their mindset work and business growth. Unsurprisingly, Gemma and I both expressed that we’ve run into similar hurdles that our clients have experienced.
When we decide to become a life coach, there’s almost an expectation that we become certified and then we’ll have clients. Many of us don’t realize we’re actually launching our business and once we do, we say, “what do I do now?”
What DO most coaches do at that point? They start consuming information. After all, it only makes sense that if you’ve never been in business, you don’t know what you don’t know, right?
So, they head to YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, etc., and subscribe to everything they can to learn how to grow their business. While it’s fantastic to educate yourself and continue to learn, the sheer volume of information out there is so overwhelming, and sometimes contradictory to one another, that it’s incredibly easy to get stuck in indecision and become paralyzed.
And when you’re not taking action, there are no amount of “good thoughts” or motivational quotes or mantras that will bring about results. You simply cannot just believe your way there.
So, what’s the missing piece?
Consistent implementation of effective marketing.
“Your vision and your why and your reason are so important; but if you’re not reflecting and taking action to get your way there, it’s just not going to work for you.” - Gemma, Business Building Boutique Podcast, Episode 117
The hard truth about running your life coaching business is that you’re going to need to be willing to be uncomfortable. You really need to dial in on why you’re doing this so you have something to tap into when things get hard.
You need to have a really deep level of commitment to push through to the other side of building a business - especially when you’re doing it alone as a life coach.
And when things are really tough and you’re ready to give up, you can think about your “why.” Get yourself fired back up and then start taking action to turn things around.
During my time at the Life Coaching School where I became certified as a life coach, we learned about the concept that life is 50/50. 50% of our time we feel motivated, empowered, and productive. The other 50% of the time we feel more down and achieve less. I decided to go back for the last year and look at it through that lens, and I can concur that my year evened out to pretty much 50/50.
That means if I had only worked the time that I felt “good” I would have only worked half the year. I need to plan consistent action so that when I’m feeling down I can still get the work done that I need to in order to keep my income steadily flowing.
“If you’re waiting to feel a bubbly feeling of inspiration to start doing your work, you’re only going to get results half the time. You can’t run a business on half the time.” - Debbie
You cannot simply wait to have an inspired thought before you take inspired action - you must create a system that allows for consistent action.
Gemma asked a really important question during our interview - “why?”
It seems like a silly question to ask, but why are results important?
The fact of the matter is, we feel good when we see results. We’re validated in our efforts and we get excited about what’s possible.
Results are going to enable you to feel good and have good thoughts, which will in turn fuel more actions, creating even more results.
And just think about the trickle down effect. Your life coaching business helping clients is changing their lives, and impacting the lives of everyone that they in turn serve, and so on. This ripple effect is powerful stuff, and you bringing in the results you’re looking for is what gets it started.
