TRANSCRIPT

So welcome, Emily. I am excited I think you just got done with your first paid coaching call. I did, I did. Yeah, it was really exciting. Surreal. Um, but it's really exciting to connect with somebody and then know that I'm really gonna help change her life, so that feels amazing. Um, but it still doesn't feel real. Isn't that so funny?'Cause you've been working on it for months. Before we go any further, tell everybody what you do, who you help, and, just what your business is all about. Yes. So my business is Mile High Money Mama, and I am a personal finance coach that focuses on working with women to reach financial independence. So whatever that looks like for them, whether that's early retirement or just an increase in funds so that they feel financially stable, meeting them where they're at and then getting them to that level that makes them feel very confident with their money. And I like to compare it to, instead of being somebody that's bad with money, now you're somebody that invests money. Oh, that is so good. Was this the same vision that you had when we first started working together? No. I didn't know what that was. I knew that I wanted to help teach people about money, and I knew that I wanted to work with women specifically because I feel like it's a very underserved community and a group. And I had that understanding, but I think when we first were talking, I was thinking more lower income, getting people out of debt, and through our conversations and, the really clear for you but the epiphany for me of, if they can't afford to pay you, you don't have a business. Yeah. Yeah. And transforming that to getting people that have money to, that they're wasting, essentially, and getting rid of that frustration and getting them to feel really good about keeping their money and then using it thoughtfully. And you and Thais actually also really helped me with the concept of changing their mindset, which is really, I think, what hits home for so many people, is the anger and the frustration and the guilt that they feel, and they see that they have all this money that they're making, but it's… there's nothing left at the end of the month. And so helping them work through that because that is actually, I think, the sweet spot and the more… the place that I can do the most, effective work. That is so good. Okay. You sent me an email, which is what prompted me to say,"Okay, let's have an episode. Let's record this episode. I want you to share." Tell me about that email, if you wanna share what you were sharing you were excited about something. Tell us about the email. Yeah, so I wanted to reach out to you right away 'cause I was, I just was overwhelmed and overcome with so much joy and gratitude because when we first sat down, I had a concept in my mind, but I didn't know how to get there. And working through your program, it was really step by step, where, there's so much of this is what you do and this is how you get there, and nobody explains the very, very beginning, and everybody tells you once you're there. Everything that I see is how you get more clients or how you get higher ticket, and it was, yeah, but how do you get that client? And that was what really drew me to your program, and I felt like you actually got me there. And, one thing that stuck out in my mind was we had a call recently and I kept saying, I should have a client by now. I should have a client by now. I'm doing all the things. I don't get it." And my family, everybody was really loving and supportive and said it'll come. And you got on the call and you said, "Why don't you have a client? You should have a client." And I just, I needed somebody to validate that I was also on the right mindset of, no, this should work by now. Yeah. And that really reinvigorated me to go, "No, I should. What am I missing? What am I doing wrong?" Yeah. And so it just, it felt really seen and heard, and then sure enough, right after that I landed the client. So that was… That made me feel great in that I wasn't wrong in being frustrated at that point. and there's just so much to it that you don't know until you're there. I remember we were talking, you'd had some consultations and, they didn't turn out to be winners, right off the bat, which I always say, you don't go buy something big from the very first person at the very first moment you talk to them, right? You think about something. Somehow we get on a call with somebody and we think they should just decide just like that, and it does often happen that way, but, there's a lot that goes into it. So you were looking at the calls, you were assessing it, you were thinking through how you were showing up. Yeah, and the interesting thing is that call that I had that I thought I landed her, and then I sent that to you, and you so graciously reviewed that so quickly, I really appreciated that. I was absolutely crushed and devastated, and I just felt like,"God, this is just not gonna happen. I don't know what's going wrong." That's the woman that hired me. It just, she's going through a divorce, and the … I've not done that. I don't know how much work that is, and she was just overwhelmed, and she kept texting me, which was really weird. I thought, "But if you wanna do it, then buy it. Why aren't you moving forward?" And she just had too much going on, and then she What is it? It was like 20 days or something. And then she messaged me again, and I didn't wanna be a pushy person. I'm really irritated by over-salesy, and I at first felt like I should be doing that, and then I realized that's not being true to my identity and myself, and I don't like the way that feels. And so I just said, "All right. you know, it'll be somebody else." And then she kept communicating with me, and it was really strange because I just kept thinking, If you wanna do it, then do it," 'cause I'm a doer. And she just needed that extra time to work through whatever she was going through, and showed up, and I was just totally blown away that much time could pass and she would still be that person. And I'm so excited that it's her. Of all the other people that I had talked to, and I have another person that, she's traveling and then I'd met with her and her husband, and they're a local people that I know, and they wanna get started but they're waiting for school to start, which I can't disagree- Yeah with 'cause they have littles as well. Yeah. And so I'm expecting that one to come through as well, but it was just that this woman really is my person. She's going through a divorce. Her husband handled all the finances. She doesn't know anything about it. and he committed financial adultery to her. And so she's very sensitive, But she's also eager because she sees the power that she'll gain from that. Even though you and I had talked about divorced women and how we put that one aside, it's funny that this has now come back to my first client. Yeah. And I think that I'm gonna do the most for her because she's really starting at zero. Oh my goodness, that is so great and such a great reminder. I always tell people to have, things written down in an evidence bank, and this is, one of the things, if you're listening to this, that you should write in an evidence bank that this is a reality of how things work. Emily's evidence is that she talked to somebody three weeks it took before she said yes, and, it just reminds you that not everybody decides on the spot. just because somebody hasn't answered you back yet doesn't ever mean it's a no, right? You just don't actually know, and the longer that you're in business, you'll be blown away that somebody from a year ago comes back, And you're like,"Oh, they never forgot about me," which is another thing that's really good about continuing to market and keep yourself out there, because people will stay engaged in what you're doing. But it is a hard journey getting to that first one. It really is. It's painful. Yeah, and I screamed. I was excited when the payment came through, because I just didn't believe, 'cause she kept saying yes, but then she just never booked it. And when it did, I came down screaming, and my husband was playing with my daughters with this brand-new microphone we got for one of them on our trip to New York, and they were singing into it, and I yelled into the microphone. And then everybody just was jumping up and screaming, and it was… I just kept saying, "I have a real business. I have a real business," because, it's a hobby until you make money. Yeah. And so now it's official. So good. and I remember not that long ago, you were really discouraged and is this even gonna work? But you are not a quitter, that is for sure. You're not a quitter I love that. But what emotions would you say, since you started this, just the journey that you feel like you've been through, because I think it's in the beginning, it's like, "Oh, I've got this. it's all gonna work out really fast." You were thinking that in the beginning. I don't know, what were you thinking? Oh, yeah. I thought, it'll be a month of setup and then a month of understanding, and by the end of the second month I should have a client. And I remember sitting in one of our group meetings and putting that in the message, of I feel like I should have a client by now, and somebody else in the group said, "I feel the same way." And it was… it'll come when it comes, as long as you stick with it. But I am so accustomed to things coming quickly and naturally that it is an incredibly painful place to be. You second-guess yourself I'm from a generation that if you just work hard enough, you'll get there, and I felt like I was working hard enough, and I couldn't understand why it wasn't clicking. It's also interesting because you're not actually ready when you think you're ready. And, I sometimes I'm like, "Thank God I just have a brand new product that just sold." It was like a click and buy. And the first one I was on my walk and I was like, "Wait a minute. Do we have the automation set up on the back end?" And I literally had a moment. Thank God only one person bought on the first day, because if it was 100 like, anybody would want I would've had 100 people to figure out, but it was only one. So it's like you need to start right? So some things, those things are blessings in disguise. you had to have time to figure out what people really needed probably and to get yourself to a different space of believing, like the mindset part added to the coaching. Oh, yeah. there's several times I look back and I say I wasn't ready. I would not have been producing a good enough product that I was gonna be totally proud of. And through that, all the in-person networking I was doing, I was finding my voice and I was finding a better way to talk about it. And anything before that, I… While it would've been some version of success, it wouldn't have had the confidence that I have now. And so that's actually how she found me, was she was in one of those networking events that I had done a panel and I spoke to a bunch of women, and we just happened to be seated across from each other. And I was able to sit there and feel very confident and strong about where I was and what I was going to be able to provide her. And I think that because we were sitting face to face, and I could easily articulate, then I was there. Even though I had my outline done for a long time, I still hadn't spent enough time to really be able to say with detail, this is what the program is." It would've been so abstract. And so to be able to give more detailed answers that sounded more like I completely understood it, yeah, I would've been talking more abstract and that's not as convincing. and even looking back, Emily, you could say when you started networking, and I would guess that was maybe, what, six weeks into your starting with me. It wasn't right away, but it was pretty close. You started networking, I remember, just even being uncomfortable even doing that. And yeah, you have to learn how to ta- I'm like, "Just go talk to people. Just, you don't have to sell 'em anything. Just go talk to them." Like even that is harder than what people think it is. Oh, I sat in my car for five minutes psyching myself up to even walk in the building. I was terrified. Yeah. And it didn't go away being there. It just stayed terrified, but I just kept telling myself,"You're not gonna die from this. You'll get through it. And if it goes horribly wrong, just don't come back," "What's the worst that's gonna happen?" And that actually got me better and better talking to total strangers, where I'm used to speaking in a presenter mode, but I'm not used to having, walking into a room where you don't know a single person. That's an, a really terrifying thing. But it also taught me a lot about being able or how to speak intelligently and confidently and not being super timid and trying to hide in a corner and not be noticed. So what have you done for marketing? I s- I fought you from the beginning on social media. And then, you told me- You did the YAP Challenge. Yeah, you told me I had to do it anyway. And, so I dabbled a little bit, and I didn't like it, and then I did sign up for that YAP Challenge, and I just… I said, either, either you're gonna do this or you're not. And so I just jumped in with both feet, and then I joined Instagram, and TikTok, and Facebook, and LinkedIn. I dabbled a little bit in Substack, which I think I'll do later, but it just felt like too many things. Too much. Uh-huh. And but I did a lot of the social media stuff, and that also helped me get ideas of what I could bring to the coaching, and then got to doing, posting every single day. And that, while it is a grind, it also helps you hone your skill. Yeah. you don't realize it's… Y- you see so much bad stuff on the internet that you th- or, cringe stuff, and you don't realize that you just have to work through it, and the more you do it, the less time it takes and the less energy it takes. Yeah. And you don't ever know which one is gonna do something. Those haven't produced anything yet, but I'm have incredible confidence that they will over time. Yeah. And then I do, the in-person networking stuff that I was totally blown away that I enjoy that as much as I do. I actually had coffee with a woman yesterday that I met at a networking event just to connect, and two other women I met with, they wanna start a podcast, and so we're gonna do our first podcast, recording next week. And so all of these things that I never would've considered, and it's not… Before, it would be, okay, this is something that you do to work forward, and what it is turning into is this is something that you actually enjoy and you look forward to doing, which I never would've tried if you hadn't said, "But you have to." And I said, okay, I'm paying her, I'll at least try it," and I was really surprised by how much of that A, you were right. I don't know why that surprised me, but you were absolutely right, but then, B, it wasn't as terrible as I thought it was going to be once I got out of my own way. So what would you say to somebody who's either new or getting started about those expectations? what would you say about that? What does it take and where should your expectations be? Yeah. I think that the, the thing to remember is that you get out of it what you put into it. And if you're not gonna put forth that effort, you're not gonna get… You're not gonna produce the results that you hope for. And also that there's… It's this wonderful space that you can grow and learn, and you can make mistakes. I think having no clients is an incredible, powerful, amazing place to be because it doesn't matter what you do. We've got a couple in our group that have changed their, program a couple different times, and you're allowed to do that because there's nobody that you're messing with what, who's already working with you, or you're not rebranding yourself. You are starting at zero, so you can do anything you want, and if you see something's not working, you can always change it really easily. And I feel like that is such a gift, is when you're at the bottom, you can't fail, right?'Cause there's nothing to lose. Yeah. And that's a really invigorating… That's something I kept telling myself is it doesn't matter if this doesn't work. You can try something else. And that kept me going when it wasn't working. Oh my goodness. that's gold right there, yeah. But you do. you get out what you put in, and also sometimes you have to put in more than you expect, right? It's like putting in the reps. It's like becoming a good, basketball player or tennis player. Whatever the analogy is, it takes time to do that, and I've never asked you this, Emily, but I know that I was looking around. I went from having, business locally that I was very successful at. I got online, and I just instantly looked at people and, they were making hundreds and, millions, and I'm like, "Well, I can do that." it was just like the identity that you just, like, latch on to crazy ideas that you see out there, and I was sure that I would be able to do it because I'd already done it. What was your impression of what you thought you could do? Yeah. I think the biggest thing that I kept saying to myself was, "Why not me? Why does it get to be everybody else? Why can't I be that person?" And the only thing that's standing in the way of that is just not trying, and I always tell myself that the only thing that's gonna happen is if you don't try, you won't move forward. And so you can guarantee that you'll stay in the same place if you don't make a change, and That's been the driving force, and that's actually how this all even started is I was just unhappy in my, my day job, and I was burnt out after 10 years of being burnt out. I've been in it for 15, but the 10 years, the last 10 were the hardest. And I said, "Okay, either you can complain about it or you can do something," and then that's how I found you and said,"I'm gonna, I'm gonna bet on myself, and I know I can outwork anybody, and I'm more determined than most people, and that's all I have to do. Everything else will come. I can learn it as I go, and I don't have anything to lose or fail at because I'm already there," right? So that confidence kept running through. Okay, let's talk about money and charging. we're not gonna talk about what you charge, but I just would like to touch on that because that's another interesting thing that until you are there getting ready to charge, you don't realize what kind of thoughts you have around your pricing and collecting money and all that stuff. What's been your evolution around that? I think initially because I come from a different occupation where I do have a set hourly rate and it's pretty high, I had a higher sense of worth, and so I actually ran into trouble with when I was trying to do the lower ticket stuff at the beginning, I just, it didn't feel good because I knew what I could generate in the other business, and so it felt like I was undervaluing myself. And so I touched on that for a little bit, and it just didn't feel good. It, I, it gave me the ick. And then I tried, okay, high ticket, and I went I, I feel like I need a little bit more clients under my belt and years of having this before I can go there, and that's actually how you and I landed on the different clientele of that middle range. And so that, that evolution of thought is how I got to my price point, and that I can feel comfortable with. I feel like I'm providing that much. That was also the fear is a high ticket, you have to produce this in- Oh, yeah … credible product. Mm-hmm. And I knew that I couldn't spend that much energy on that. I, that's not to say I do aspire to get there- Yeah … but out the gate it's not practical. And the other thing that was really important is when we were talking through that, that meeting where I was really frustrated and you were saying,"You should have a client," and we started talking about price, I was talking about over-reducing an offer, and you were saying, "Absolutely not. You don't go below this. This is the number you should sell at." And that's the number that sold. And that was also really reassuring that my value of myself aligned with what you were saying. And so I could still give some sort of a discount to get that first client, but that it didn't devalue me and me- Yeah like I'm not gonna present as much because I'm frustrated with what they've paid. Yeah. you're just really confirming what I always tell people, pricing is personal. you said, "I didn't wanna undercharge what I am valued at in my day job," right? and you can see in our group of women, pricing is just all over the place. one person might think she's worth this, and that's really what she should be charging, and then somebody else thinks that. But again, there's just so many misconceptions you never even think about. When I started my business, they said, "You should do high ticket," and maybe I should have. But I didn't feel good about it. I, same thing as you, even though I'd been an expert at this for years, was like, I don't know," You have that moment when you're in an I don't know, you should not do it. Like, you knowing you shouldn't do, the higher ticket. Yeah. It's just interesting. All of the, all that you find out about yourself when you have a business that you did not realize was even gonna matter or that was even part of the puzzle. Well, and that's something else that changed, is I was so focused on, okay, I wanna make X amount of dollars a month. Okay, at this price point, I have to have this many clients. And what I realized was, yeah, but I don't wanna work that much. Yeah. The whole point is to get some more time freedom back. And so that also helped me land on a number that was, okay, what's a number that I can feel good about myself, but then also not feel overworked, overwhelmed, and burn out again? And so that was something that I learned through some of those exercises that you had is, what is my capacity to put forth a good product? Because if I'm exhausted, I'm not showing up for my client either. I'm not helping them. I'm resenting them. And so I I needed to find that balance, too, of okay, what is my max per month that right now I'm comfortable doing? So good. You're such a good student. That's what you are. I just wanna commend you because you have been so good about listening and taking the advice. And, even at the moment when I could see when I say something to you, you're like, "I don't know," you do go process it and, you find what is true for you. But you're a really good executor. That's what you are. You took the action no matter what. if I disagree with you, that's fine, but you're who I am paying to help me, and I will try it. And if it still doesn't work, then we'll have a conversation, and I know that you're open to receive that. And okay, well, let's find another way. But I'm not gonna just shut it down because, oh, I know more than Debbie. No way. this is what Debbie does. Yeah. This is why I paid her, is so that she'll get me there. And if she says I have to get on it social media, then I guess I'm going on social media. And turns out, I even was like, ooh, do I wanna be, a content creator? This is not terrible. And being a part of that Jessie Jeans program- Yeah … yeah, I want $7.4 million in 10 weeks. I wish I was in that group. My goodness, that is really something. But again, while it looks like She's like the, unicorn that's outside of the norm. But she didn't start yesterday. No. She's so transparent about it. it was funny 'cause I was in her program the same time that I was been doing yours, and I was seeing so many parallels between the way that you two talk. And her entire philosophy is, reps over research, is what she says. But then she also says "I want to underpromise and overdeliver." Yeah. She's like, "I want my clients to walk away with the most incredible program." And what she talked about was it wasn't her promoting herself, I was in group one, and it was all of us promoting her- Yeah… without her even planning it because she gave us so much more than we thought we were getting, and that's exactly what your program is I thought I was gonna get some information, and it actually was to a point of overwhelm of, oh my God- Yeah this is, oh, this is a lot. I don't know if I'm gonna do all this. And then, but you have it broken up step by step. And and that was, again, it was the, there's so much that's being provided. Then it starts to feel like I'm getting this at a steal, which is also, I know that's, you- you believe in going above and beyond, and that comes through. And so you wanna also then do that for that person. And so I wanna emulate that in my program and make sure that my clients are walking away going, "Man, I thought it, the price I was gonna pay was a lot, but now I think I should have paid a lot more for that." Yeah. Yeah. I'm positive that will be the case with anybody that works with you because- The financial shift that you can help people make, I know I told you from the very beginning once we got to the niche that seemed right, like you're gonna make money because you help people make money, you help people understand money, and it's like for the rest of their life. it's a good deal to work with you because it, it changes your life, and I would say changes your children's life. And, when you understand money in a different way… Of course, I'm telling your story, but when you understand money in a different way than the way that you are around your kids it's dramatic change. So if you have money issues, go work with Emily. If you want to be financially free, go work with Emily. And that's something you and I had worked through, was was for me to understand that the, the true value of my program is I'm not just teaching people how to, save an extra 200 bucks. I'm teaching them how to change their behavior so that as their goals and their life changes, they can keep reapplying the program, and that's the part that I think is the most valuable, and that's what I sold this first client on and the other ones that I've talked to, is, "Look, I'm not just here to put money in your pocket. I'm here to teach you these skills so that-" "you can reuse this over and over. You can go back to all of these these products that I'm giving you, and you can reapply as life changes or you're off course." These are, still can come back for the, the one-on-one coaching, which is, the, the follow-up of if you really need like a personal trainer, you need somebody accountable to you, or that you're accountable to. I offer that as well as a, later if that's what they want. But ideally, they go through the three-month program, and then they walk away and they go, "I get it." And now a year later, you get a promotion. Okay, how do I not blow that income? Oh, I'm gonna go back and reapply these things I learned. And that's what I think really sets it apart, is it's I'm teaching a life skill, not just how you save 200 bucks. So I'm thinking right now, Emily, you gotta think of your words. I say you come and you build a business for a lifetime. You learn the things one time. These are principles. Doesn't matter what I teach are principles that if you have a multi-million dollar business, you still have to do what I taught, the foundation. You are literally doing the same thing too. come learn how to be financially free one time. And use it the rest of your life. Yes. No, no matter where they are,'cause you're working outside of a financial planner. You're not a financial planner. You're talking about things that are completely different than what they do, Yeah, It's funny, is a lot of times people, will ask me financial advisor questions. Like, where, what do I invest in? No, no. I can't tell you that. You need to have special licensing for that. I went to school for that and decided I didn't like it. Mine is how do you keep the money you have already earned? You've already given those hours away. How do you keep the money that you traded that life hour? How do you keep that and actually get it to work for you? And then what you do with that, when you have a surplus, then you can go to that person and invest in this, that, and the other. But I keep that money in your pocket at the end of the month, and that is the skill. That's how I got to my financial independence, is really honing that skill Is there anything else that you wanna share? I, I caught you off guard, I'm sure. You send me this email, and I'm like, "You gotta get on the podcast," 'cause just really, I'm so proud of what you've done. I feel like a mother sometimes with everybody that I work with. And, the fact that it took, you said five months to the day, I tell people, "In four, five, six month, you'll see the shift happen." And in the beginning, it's, again, it's like, "Oh, she's not really talking about me. She doesn't really know me," kind of thing. But there's just, there's more than than you understand to start. I would say that the thing that really comes across to me, and I see it in your group as well, but I see it in everyday life, is there's so much wanting out there and not doing, and it's just do it. Just do it. Go out there and just try. The worst thing that's gonna happen is you're gonna fail, and so what? But you tried. And I do see some of that in the group where there's so much second-guessing, and it's, go try it, and then if it doesn't work, don't surmise, don't procrast learn. Just try it, and then you'll know, and then we can move on, and you can do the next thing. Or if it doesn't work, tell Debbie and Thais, and they'll tell you why or how to get around that. There's a solution for it. You just have to try. That's it. And I'm just… When I sent you that email, I was in tears. I was so excited because I thought,"Oh my God, I went and looked, and I found our original email, and that's when I replied on that, and I went,"Oh, it was five months to the day. I signed up with you that night. You were like, 'Get in immediately. Do this exercise. Can you be ready by Thursday?'" Yes, I started on Wednesday, and it was, like, five months ago, it was just something I was thinking about. And that's what I just, I wanted to convey to you was, oh, you got me there, right? yes, I did the work, but you showed me the work to do, so I didn't waste time on the things that wouldn't produce what I wanted. And that was just… It was, it's just incredible. I'm so grateful to you, and I know all of your students, we all love you so much, but it's, it's- I couldn't have, I couldn't have asked for a better coach, and this is… I'm just overjoyed. It- I just, I'm so indebted and so grateful. It's just- Geez, you're gonna make me cry, 'cause I'm in it with you, girl. I am. I'm in it with you. And until you get to this place, the place where Emily's at right now, you really can't… I could cry right now. You really can't understand what the tears are about, and about the sense of wow, what you just did, right? It changes… Really, it sounds so dramatic when I say it changes who you are, but it does. That what is possible for your business now by just getting paid and, it just changes that. And from here, things really start to pick up. You just have to get to that one- … and get over the, the hurdle of it, yeah, and that I just kept screaming, I did it." Yeah.'Cause then it was the… I knew I could do it, but then to be there, right? Yeah. It's like you finish the marathon. You're like, "Oh my God, I knew I was gonna keep going, but I crossed that line." Yeah."I finally did it, and I did it," it's powerful. Yeah. Emily, thank you so much. I know y'all just got back from vacation, living your freedom-based life. And I was like, "Let's get on a call right away," but I just thought it'd be so fun to capture your experience and share it with others. So thank you for being so transparent and the gold nuggets that you dropped here about you get back what you put in, and that, people need to just try. it really is. I get so aggravated trying to convince people, this is the smallest investment that you could make on starting a business, and the risk is really just embarrassment. Mm-hmm. Right? The risk is maybe you'll fail, but you will never know. They dink around trying all these other things, and you just went for it. you started, you… I think your idea was what? in January is when you started thinking about… You hired me in March. Yeah. Yeah, it was fast. Yeah. But it was fine. Yeah. And I'm also… I see all these horror stories of these people that hire these coaches and spend all this money, and they're terrible, and I'm like, "Really? This has been my only coach that I've hired, and she is a dream, and I should have paid double." And, it's just awesome. I feel very lucky- Yeah … to have found you. Oh, thank you. okay. You go have an amazing weekend with the family, and just enjoy the, this incredible moment. And I'm super excited for this lady, What you're gonna do for her is, transformative.
